Coach’s Spring 2022 collection is a love letter to New York and some of its most famous establishments
Zabar’s, Serendipity 3, and The Eagle all received acknowledgments (and derivative treatment) during Stuart Vevers’ latest release for the brand.
When Fashionista interviewed Stuart Vevers earlier this year he explained how, after graduating from fashion school, he desperately wanted to leave the UK, where he had grown up and spent his entire life, for New York City.
“It was in the late 90s and there was a real buzz around town. There is always a buzz about New York, but in particular something really important was going on, especially in the city. fashion, “he told us.
This is how Vevers found his first job at Calvin Klein. Years later, having risen through the ranks and leading the creative trajectories of some of the world’s greatest luxury houses, he found himself shaping the vision for one of the city’s most iconic fashion exports: Coach. Of course, New York has been a constant muse.
One can imagine that Vevers filled his mood board with images – or caricatures – of New York City in the 90s, as evidenced by the colorful houndstooth prints, the short-sleeved ponchos, the mini pleated skirts and denim vests (bonus points if the latter is paired with flared jeans). It’s not nostalgia, though: the designer is updating these silhouettes with crisp, crisp cuts and cuts, rich colors and textures, and sleek accessories for a modern sensibility. Still, there is room for playfulness, as with cartoon trompe l’oeil knits mimicking button-down cardigans and logo-branded crewnecks for “Coach Video” (not to mention the lineup. “Coach TV: Public Access” with Chaka Khan, Megan Thee Stallion, Rickey Thompson and more opening the show).
Vevers frequently quotes the heritage of the brand, too, as a source of inspiration. This time he specifically calls the Bonnie cashin era and its “colorful and optimistic optimism” as informing the tone of spring 2022: “It is a collection that I have designed in response to the times we live in – and a collective wish for a better and brighter future” , he wrote. Some vintage Cashin outerwear was also featured on the runway, styled with the new spring pieces.
Coach’s latest addition also pays homage to the city he lives in by naming some of New York’s most iconic establishments in the product: and bags advertising Zabar’s, The Eagle, Central Park and Serendipity 3. (By the way , Serendipity 3 is having a lot of fun this Fashion Week – Batsheva hosted his presentation at the Upper East Side cafe known for its iced hot chocolate, too. Who’s doing their PR?) Don’t be surprised if those- these quickly fly away when the collection finally arrives in stores.
